Eric Stanton (1926-1999)
Eric Stanton was a pseudonym; his real name was Ernest Stanzoni. Unlike some other bondage artists, Stanton generally depicted female dominant bondage of men by women.
He is said to have shared a studio with comics legend Steve Ditko (born 2 November 1927 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania) is a renowned comic book artist and writer best known as the co-creator of Spider-Man.
Ditko studied at the Cartoonists and Illustrators School in New York City under Jerry Robinson and began professionally illustrating comic books in 1953. His early works were for Charlton Comics, producing science fiction, horror and mystery stories. Ditko then began working for what would become Marvel Comics.
Eric Stanton self-published the Stantoons series beginning in the 1970s, and there were at least 94 issues (that I can find reference to).
The famed fetish artist, Eric Stanton, and Ditko shared a studio in New York at 8th and 43rd from 1958 to 1966. Stanton produced very erotic, pornographic images, depicting women in all sorts of ''poses''.
At one time in history, Ditko denied ever touching Stanton's work, even though Stanton himself said they would each dabble in each other's art; mainly spot-inking. The evidence to your left speaks for itself. It is from the Eric Kroll-compiled book from May of 1997. It is the last page of the huge volume. Ever seen the covered-face-of-the-artist motif before?
Eros Comics has published various 'Stantoons' reprints over this decade, many of which include work Ditko OBVIOUSLY had a part in at least inking. Looking at Stanton work he produced on his own can only verify this. Below, they are links to four Stanton images. Can anyone tell me WHEN the original Stantoons were issued?
Russian of origin, Eric Stanton was born in New York. He studied at the School of Visual Arts and made his debut as an illustrator and comic artist in 1947 with Irwing Klaw, a publisher of sadomasochistic paraphernalia. Proving himself a master of the bondage genre, Stanton created an impressive number of stories, such as 'The Nightmares of Diana', 'Marie's Extraordinary Adventure' and 'Phyllis in Danger'. At the same time he worked for magazine La Revue Érotique, using pseudonyms like Savage and John Bee. In the early 1960s, he became an independent illustrator, often working for rich clients who ordered his work for private use. His work has been published in numerous European magazines, like Bédé X, Blue and Kiss Comix.
